Native Plants That Thrive in Boulder & Northern Colorado Landscapes

Smart plant choices for yards that look great and handle our climate

If you've lived in Boulder or Northern Colorado for any length of time, you already know that our climate can be rough on plants. Hot, dry summers. Intense sun. Cold winters. And soil that's more clay than anything else in a lot of areas.

Traditional landscaping plants—the ones that do great in wetter climates—often struggle here. They need constant watering, extra care, and even then, they don't always make it through a tough winter or a particularly dry stretch in July.

That's where native plants come in. These are species that evolved right here on the Front Range. They're built for our conditions. They handle the sun, the cold, the dry spells, and the clay soil without needing you to baby them. And when you choose the right ones, they look good doing it.

Here's a look at some of the native plants we use regularly in landscapes around Boulder, Longmont, Fort Collins, and the surrounding areas—plants that actually survive and thrive long-term.

Blue Grama Grass

Blue grama is one of the toughest native grasses you'll find. It's short—usually stays around 6 to 12 inches—and it has a distinctive seed head that looks a bit like an eyebrow.

This grass works well as a low-water lawn alternative or as a groundcover in larger landscape beds. It goes dormant and turns tan in the winter, but it greens up nicely in spring and early summer. Once established, it needs very little water and almost no mowing.

It does best in full sun and handles our clay soils without complaint. If you're looking to reduce your lawn footprint but still want some green coverage, blue grama is a solid choice.

Penstemon (Beardtongue)

Penstemon is a flowering perennial that comes in several varieties, and most of them do great here. You'll see them with tubular flowers in shades of purple, pink, red, and white, depending on the species.

Rocky Mountain penstemon is one of the most common. It blooms in late spring and early summer, and pollinators love it. The plants are low-maintenance, drought-tolerant once established, and they don't mind our alkaline soil.

Plant them in full sun to partial shade. They look good in mixed perennial beds or as part of a xeriscape design. Just don't overwater them—they prefer things on the dry side.

Rabbitbrush

Rabbitbrush is a native shrub that blooms bright yellow in late summer and early fall, right when a lot of other plants are starting to fade. It's a tough, drought-tolerant plant that handles heat, cold, and poor soil.

It grows to about 3 to 5 feet tall and wide, so it works well as a background plant or a low hedge. The flowers attract bees and butterflies, and the silvery-green foliage looks good even when it's not blooming.

Rabbitbrush needs full sun and good drainage. Once it's established, you can pretty much forget about it. It's one of those plants that just does its thing without much input from you.

Apache Plume

Apache plume is a small shrub—usually 3 to 6 feet tall—that works well in a lot of different landscape settings. It has white flowers in late spring and early summer, followed by feathery seed heads that give it a soft, airy look through the rest of the season.

This plant is extremely drought-tolerant and handles full sun and poor soil. It's also deer-resistant, which is a bonus if you live in areas where deer browsing is an issue.

Apache plume looks good as a specimen plant, in groupings, or mixed into a native shrub border. It doesn't need much water once it's established, and it doesn't require regular pruning to look tidy.

Blanket Flower (Gaillardia)

Blanket flower is a low-growing perennial with bright red and yellow daisy-like blooms. It flowers from late spring through fall, which gives you a long season of color.

This plant is tough. It handles heat, drought, and poor soil, and it keeps blooming even when conditions aren't ideal. It grows about 12 to 18 inches tall and spreads slowly over time.

Plant it in full sun. It works well in perennial beds, along pathways, or in rock gardens. Deadheading spent flowers will keep it blooming longer, but even if you don't, it'll still put on a good show.

Serviceberry (Amelanchier)

Serviceberry is a native shrub or small tree that offers something in every season. It has white flowers in early spring, edible berries in early summer, and brilliant orange-red fall color. In winter, the bare branches have a nice shape.

It grows anywhere from 6 to 20 feet tall, depending on the variety and how you prune it. It works as a specimen plant, a privacy screen, or part of a mixed shrub border.

Serviceberry prefers full sun to partial shade and needs regular water while it's getting established. After that, it's fairly drought-tolerant. The berries attract birds, which is a nice bonus if you like wildlife in your yard.

Rocky Mountain Juniper

Rocky Mountain juniper is an evergreen that's native to the Front Range. It's a slow-growing tree or large shrub that can eventually reach 15 to 30 feet tall, though it takes years to get there.

This plant is extremely drought-tolerant and handles our cold winters without any trouble. It has a nice upright or columnar shape, and the blue-green foliage looks good year-round.

Junipers work well as windbreaks, privacy screens, or focal points in a landscape. They prefer full sun and well-drained soil. Once established, they need very little water and almost no maintenance.

Scarlet Globemallow

Scarlet globemallow is a low-growing perennial with bright orange flowers that bloom from late spring through summer. It's extremely drought-tolerant and handles heat and full sun without any issues.

The plant grows about 6 to 12 inches tall and spreads slowly over time. It works well as a groundcover, in rock gardens, or along the edges of landscape beds.

Globemallow doesn't need much water once it's established. In fact, it prefers dry conditions. It's also deer-resistant and attracts hummingbirds and native bees.

Common Mistakes with Native Plants

Even though native plants are tough, people still make mistakes when planting them. Here are a few things to avoid.

Overwatering is the big one. A lot of homeowners assume that more water is always better, but native plants are adapted to dry conditions. Too much water can lead to root rot or fungal issues. Water deeply when you plant them to help them get established, then back off. Most natives do fine with occasional deep watering once their roots are in.

Poor placement is another issue. Planting a sun-loving species in shade, or putting a plant that needs good drainage in a low spot where water collects, will cause problems. Pay attention to what each plant needs and put it where it'll actually thrive.

And don't expect instant results. Native plants often put their energy into root growth in the first year or two, so they might not look like much at first. But once they're established, they take off and require way less maintenance than non-native species.

Planning for the Long Term

Choosing the right plants is one of the most important decisions you'll make when landscaping in Colorado. Native species give you a yard that looks good, uses less water, and requires less ongoing care.

Take the time to think about what you want your landscape to do. Do you need privacy? Year-round color? Pollinator habitat? Low-maintenance groundcover? Once you know what you're after, you can choose plants that fit both your goals and our climate.
